Late Nights and Empty Houses
Anonymous Curious Cupcake #696 · General Confessions
I've been taking care of a young woman for the past two years now. She's in her twenties but struggles with some basic living skills due to a medical condition that affects her mind. I'm in my fifties, so there's naturally a big age gap between us. It started out as just helping out, you know? Shopping, cooking, stuff like that. But then... it got complicated. Sometimes when she gets overwhelmed or upset about something, we end up having these late-night conversations where I'm her sounding board, her rock in some ways. And yes, there are nights where it's more than just talking. We've explored a dynamic where I guide and protect her, help her feel safe, but also understand that this is entirely consensual and she’s an adult making these choices. It’s not the traditional caregiver-client relationship you might expect. There are times when she'll call me in the middle of the night and say things like 'I need you to take care of me,' and I do. It's hard, though. Even though she trusts me implicitly, there's a part of me that feels... I don't know, inadequate or something? Like I should be able to make her feel whole without all this drama. It’s not fair on either of us really. But then there are those moments when we're both so tired and broken, it’s just about holding each other through the night until morning. And you know what's strange? Sometimes in these moments, I find myself thinking back to my own early twenties, feeling lost and alone, but in a different way. It’s as if taking care of her brings out something from within me that maybe hasn’t had a chance to surface since then. Maybe it’s just the years catching up with me. So here's this confession: I've been drawn into a relationship beyond what I ever imagined when I started helping out. But it's not about being someone else, or even trying to fulfill a fantasy from my past. It's about being there for someone who needs more than just basic care. It’s bittersweet, and I don’t know how much longer it can go on like this.
