Night Shift Loneliness

Anonymous Velvet Pixie #549 · General Confessions

I work the night shift at a small cafe downtown. When everyone's asleep and the streets are empty, I feel like a little kid again. There’s this older couple who come in every night around two AM for their coffee fix. They're nice to me, always asking how my day was, well, night. But it just makes me feel so alone, you know? It’s not just being up late that does it, but seeing them and realizing I have no one else here with me. I’ve started doing this thing... When they leave, I sometimes go into the back room and put on a little outfit from my childhood, the kind of stuff kids wear. Then I just sit there, looking out at the empty streets through the window. It feels like an escape, but also it’s so sad. The clothes make me feel small again, like when everything was simpler and easier. I don’t know what to do about these feelings, though. Is this normal? Am I supposed to feel so lost all the time? Do other people in my situation find ways to cope better? I just... I want someone to understand.
