Caregiving Without Consent

Anonymous Dizzy Sprite #514 · General Confessions

I've been caring for someone I deeply care about, Alex, who's in their early 30s and has a condition that makes it hard for them to function daily without help. I'm nonbinary, in my mid-20s, and we started this arrangement several years ago when they moved back home after a difficult breakup. Over time, I've taken on more responsibilities: cooking, cleaning, managing their medication... all of which has become incredibly demanding on me both physically and emotionally. Recently, Alex began suggesting roleplay scenarios where I act as some kind of protective figure in our dynamic, calling it 'caregiving with a twist.' They insisted this was about making the situation fun for them but made it clear they didn't want to discuss what that meant or how we could manage my feelings and boundaries. The idea of playacting such scenarios felt wrong to me, especially considering all I do already. Yet, Alex pushed forward, saying these were necessary to build a stronger bond. Despite feeling uncomfortable, I tried my best to accommodate them within reasonable limits, setting firm parameters about what's okay and what isn't, ensuring everything remained consensual. But the roleplaying started straining our relationship. It felt as if they wanted me to take on more responsibility rather than helping themselves become independent or finding a professional caregiver. I've been struggling with this for weeks now, torn between caring for Alex out of love and resentment towards being treated less like an equal partner and more like a servant or nurse in these roleplays. Writing this down helps me acknowledge my feelings but leaves me wondering if it's fair to continue carrying the emotional weight without mutual support and respect.
